Frequently Asked Questions

  • Are your hunts fully guided or semi-guided?

All of our hunts are fully guided.  One of the owners will also be involved in every single hunt.

  • Do I need a hunting license or tags to hunt with you?

Yes, a valid California Hunting License is required for all of our hunts.  The appropriate tags or validations are also required depending on the hunt.  For more information on regulations, please visit the California DFW website: https://wildlife.ca.gov/Hunting

  • Do you provide firearms or do I bring my own?

Most hunters bring their own firearms.  If you do not have a firearm, please reach out to us to discuss options to utilize a guide's firearm.

  • Do you offer archery hunts?

Yes, archery hunts are available for all of our species, but ask for advanced notice so we can suggest the best time of year for higher opportunity rates.

  • How physically demanding are the hunts?

Most hunts are tailored to the physical abilities of the client, which could include a lot to nearly no hiking.  But, to improve the odds of success, the greater your physical ability the higher the success rate.

  • Can I bring a non-hunting guest or observer?

Yes, non-hunters are permitted.  In most cases we do not charge additional fees for a non-hunting guest, but if multiple non-hunting guests are requesting to join, please contact us for accomodations or additional cost details.

  • Do you offer field dressing and meat processing services?

All field dressing is included, but we do recommend that our clients make arrangements for meat processing prior to a hunt as meat processing is not included.

  • What’s included in the price of the hunt?

In field transportation while on the hunting ranches, full access to expert guide, gutting, skinning, and breakdown for transportation to your butcher.

  • What is your deposit and cancellation policy?

There is a $200 non-refundable deposit required to secure your hunt.  *SMC Williams Guide Service LLC reserves the right to cancel or reschedule hunts due to unforseen circumstances.  If we can't reschedule, the deposit will be refunded.

  • What’s the best time of year for wild pig hunts?

We are successful year round on our hog hunts.  We may suggest different times of the year for larger parties.  Contact us for more details.

  • Are your wild pig hunts free-range?

All of our wild pig hunts are free-range on working agricultural and cattle ranches.

  • What’s the typical size of hogs taken on your hunts?

Average size seems to range.  Meat hogs typically range between 120-170 pounds, but we are known for harvesting a very high percentage of trophy class animals exceeding 200+ pounds.

  • What’s the success rate on your hog hunts?

We measure success by opportunity.  We hold nearly 100% opportunity rate, but we do not offer a guarantee as the animals we pursue are wild and out of our direct control.

  • Do you charge trophy fees on your hog hunts?

We do not charge trophy fees on any of our hog hunts.  We also do not offer trophy hog hunts.  If we provide a reasonable opportunity on an animal and the client requests to pass on the animal, a $500 extension fee is required to extend the hunt for additional opportunities.

  • What caliber is recommended for hog, deer, or elk hunts?

Many calibers work well, but a larger caliber will provide better results.  We definitely encourage 7mm and 30cal projectiles for their knock down power.  If you prefer a smaller caliber with less recoil, we highly recommend pairing it with a McGuire Ballistics Copper Rose projectile to increase the lethality.

  • What is the typical shot distance?

We prefer to be under 200 yards, but our guides typically carry long range rifles to allow our clients to be successful between the 200-600 yard mark as well if there is no other opportunity.

  • Do you offer spring or fall turkey hunts?

We primarily hunt turkeys in the spring, but do offer fall hunts as well when we are not booked full with hog hunts.

  • What species of wild turkey can I expect to hunt?

We hunt Rio Grande wild turkeys.

  • What units do you guide Tule elk hunts in?

    Gabilan and Hunter Ligget

  • What’s your success rate for Tule elk hunts?

We are 100% in all of our Tule Elk hunts to date.
